Questions  &  Answers

Question:
We are interested in Chinese medicine for weight loss. We'd like to be sure the treatment is what we are looking for. We'd like to know about the treatment, which is the method, how many days per week is necessary  to come to the consulting room, how much time is spent each treatment.   Please, if you can explain it, we will be very grateful.

Answer:
It is important to first understand that I am not selling a weight loss program or diet supplement.  I am a doctor of Chinese Medicine.  While Chinese medicine can certainly treat weight gain and digestive issues, increase your metabolism and allow your body to digest, absorb, and excrete food more effectively, it does so by evaluating each individual patient and assessing the reason their system is not working optimally.

People gain weight for many different reasons.  Chinese medicine seeks to identify the source of any symptom that a patient is experiencing, and directs a personalized treatment toward balancing the system on a cellular and metabolic level to resolve the symptom.  I do not just prescribe herbs to increase urination and thus decrease water weight, I do not prescribe stimulants to reduce appetite and create more energy.  While these strategies work immediately to drop a few pounds, it does not affect the underlying reason that a patient has gained weight in the first place.

While in western medicine treatment is directed to resolution of a patient’s symptom without searching for the underlying cause, Chinese medicine views symptoms and illness as evidence that the body is not working optimally. Chinese medicine  then directs treatment to balancing the body as a whole.   Thus, resolution of symptoms indicates a healthy and balanced system.

While both modalities of medicine seek to resolve  symptoms of ill health, the crucial difference is in their approach. A patient may complain of many different symptoms, and in Chinese medicine they are considered to be related, each one stemming from the underlying imbalance.  In western medicine each different symptom would be evaluated individually and often  by different doctors and medical departments.

It is impossible to say how long I would recommend treatment for you without meeting you or your friend, evaluating your individual constitutions and discussing your needs and desires for treatment.

You should expect to come once a week for acupuncture and bodywork for at least one month.  I will prescribe a formula custom made to fit your individual constitution and constellation of symptoms.  If you are serious,  coming for weekly for treatments while taking an herbal formula and following dietary suggestions will produce good results.  After one months time we can easily see how your body is reacting and we will have a clear perspective on how long treatment will last.  The length of treatment directly relates to the length and severity of illness, the reaction of the body, and the participation of the patient.  Once your body's metabolism is optimal, you would not need to return for treatments.
